Buying guide

New or used jet ski?

Both can be a smart buy. They simply carry different risks, costs and finance questions.

Side by side

NewUsed
Purchase priceHigher upfrontUsually lower, and varies widely with age and hours
DepreciationOften steepest in the first yearsGenerally slower from a lower starting point
WarrantyTypically manufacturer or dealer coverageMay have none, or a dealer warranty on some stock
Finance optionsUsually the widest choice of lendersAsset age can narrow lenders or shorten terms
Known historyClean slateNeeds checking: servicing, hours, storage and use

Those are general patterns, not promises. A well-kept three-year-old ski from a careful owner can beat a neglected one half its age.

Engine hours matter

An hour meter on a ski is the closest thing to an odometer. Ask what the hours are, how they were used (rental fleets work skis hard) and whether service records support the number. Hours on the display should line up with the wear you can see on the seat, grips and footwells.

A used-ski inspection checklist

  • Paperwork. Hull identification number (HIN), registration, service book and proof of ownership. Check there is no finance owing on the ski.
  • Hull and pump. Look for cracks, repaired gelcoat, and damage around the intake grate and impeller. Ask about the last impeller inspection.
  • Engine. Cold start if possible. Look for corrosion, oil in the bilge or a milky oil cap. Ask about the last service and whether it was flushed after salt use.
  • Trailer. Check bearings, lights, tyres, rollers and brakes if fitted. Salt water is hard on trailers.
  • Test ride. Make sure it idles, accelerates smoothly and steers cleanly. If possible, get an independent marine mechanic to check it.

Finance questions that come up with used skis

  • Does the lender have an age limit on the ski at the end of the term?
  • Is there a different treatment for private sales versus dealer purchases?
  • Will the lender need to see the ski, or its paperwork, before settlement?

Use the Anything Marketplace watercraft listings to compare asking prices for similar skis, then start an enquiry once you have a rough budget. Buying privately also means the ACCC's consumer guarantees work differently than with a dealer, so see accc.gov.au for the basics.
